What is your previous experience with Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Development?
Hi everyone, We are doing a road trip around the very beginning of October of this year (2011) driving all the way from Brooklyn, New York down through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, all the way to Chile. We are hoping to keep our contact with major metropolitan areas as limited as possible and in turn focus on smaller, more rural communities where we believe we can get a better taste of a country's folklore. The plan is to spend about a month in each country (could be more), traveling around hoping to learn and experience as much as we can. Also, we pretty much would like to do some volunteer work in organic farms on our way through central and south america. We are able to stay 1-2 weeks or more depending on how many other farms we volunteer for. We are both knowledgeable about gardens, building shelters i.e. Chicken coops, green houses, and are very much interested in finding people who are into complete self-sustainability and permaculture. We are looking to learn more and exchange any skills to your farm. My boyfriend is completely bilingual, and I can get by on very basic spanish, I'm still learning.. We do have a dog, so anyone that is interested in hosting us as volunteer must have a soft spot for our dog Raymond. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you! Teresa y Al

Hi Thank you for your interest in our farm . Our situation has recently changed and we are not at our farm full time only about half the week. I don't feel that we can guide you that well at this time. You all look like nice folks and I wish you the best.

Light,

Harmony

Estimados Terre y Al...Parece que coincidimos en todo excepto el perro...We have 5 dogs on the community premises and a group agreement to not invite more dogs ( a few, except mine,  are pretty rowdy). Otherwise it would be lovely to meet and work with you in my almost sustainable setting. Water capture, recycling, biodigestor, rabbit-work-composting are my focus. You sound like a seasoned and courageous couple. If you land a wwoofing site around Tepoztlan (there are six places, I believe) do come by and visit...I was raised in NY, born in Calif. and have been hosting people in my  ecovillage home for 30 years. Call 739 395 5019. Good luck.

Hi Again, I recently had my first set of woofers and despite us not being able to be there the whole time it went surprisingly well. If you all are still interested perhaps we can work something out. Let me know what you think.

Hi Theresa and Al,

We have a couple of projects that would keep you busy for up to two weeks. The first is preparing for planting about two hectares of coffee (4000 plants) and involves taking out a single scoupful with a post hole digger for each plant. The area in the forest has already been cleared brush and vines. The second is to build small greenhouse-like structure to grow hydroponic green forage. We may be cutting some of the lumber from fallen trees.

There is plenty of room for all three of you. Please let me know if you can do this and when you plan to arrive.

Regards,

Steve

Hi,

There is no internet at the ranch so I didn't get your note until just now.

There is a link to a Google satellite map on the website www.ranchojixhil.com. Notice the winding periferico that connects between our area north of Comitán (Los Riegos) and the highway from San Cristóbal to Comitán. The turnoff from the highway is at about kilometer 168 (I'm fairly sure of the number. There is a Pemex there and you are heading down a long hill into Comitán). Turn left onto the periferico and follow it (be careful at the bottom of the switchback there are two gigantic topes) until just before (about 30 meters) you meet the highway where the periferico tees. On your left you will see  another paved road that enters the periferico sharply on the left. Turn left there. You know that you are on the right road if within about 50 meters of you pass underneath a large green sign that lists the names of several communities, including Los Riegos, and warns you not to pollute the river. (If you pass a Pemex on your left just after your turn you have missed the road I'm talking about. You'll need to turn around and go back.) Follow the road to Los Riegos for about 5.5 km and don't take any turns to the left. After the big white church with blue trim that you pass, the entrance to the ranch is about another 250 meters on the right. The gate is set inside the entrance drive and says Rancho Jixhil on top.

My telcel number is 963-105-3644 and movistar is 963-114-0471. I have to leave the phones outside the house to get a signal so I may not answer for a while. You can try texting too.

Hope to see you soon.

Regards,

Steve
