The Babo Yaro Farm is located near the “Nevado de Colima” National Park, one hour from Manzanillo beach. It began in 1997 as a non-profit organization, on lifeless ground, devastated by erosion and excessive logging. This meant a long process of beginning on a long awaited dream of starting an ecological and self sustaining project. It required an enormous effort to prepare the soil and make it fertile for the different practices that today we have come to carry out on the farm; as well as the necessary infrastructure to shape our dreams. Through composts we fertilized the ground to be able to plant vegetables, fruit trees, Neem trees, and we reforested ridges and hills that were totally eroded with trees indigenous to the area. We built an adobe house with electricity, running water and all the basic amenities to live. We prepared areas for animals and wild birds in their natural habitat where human contact has no reach. As well, we have different animals such as sheep that trim the grass and during the night are placed in a special area protected from coyotes. There are also horses, chickens, ducks, rabbits, donkeys, cats, raccoons, geese and dogs living in harmony under the warmth of love, excellent care and attention. This effort has been made in a selfless manner with a high sense of belonging to the planet and to nature itself.
Babo Yaro Farm presently has a multi-cultivation of various fruit trees such as mango, different citruses, nuts, custard apples (guanábana), bananas, papayas and star fruit, and, among the others, the Neem tree / Babo Yaro (Registered trademark 2007) indigenous to Asia and that requires certain climate conditions similar to the ones at the farm which made it possible for us to grow the plant from which we obtain the raw material to develop health products with the help of a laboratory. The Babo Yaro / Neem tree, sacred in many parts of the world, is indigenous to Asia, where all the parts of the tree have been used (roots, leaves, fruit, seeds, bark, wood and flower) for thousands of years to fight against plagues. It does not affect beneficial insects and is used as fertilizer, for Asian cuisine, cosmetics, and above all, as a medicinal plant for mammals and especially for humans. In ancient Sanskrit writings from India, 3000 years ago, Babo Yaro / Neem had already been mentioned. Without this tree, Indian Ayurveda traditional medicine (a holistic approach) could not be conceived.
In 2008, we started to market our products, after the ten year period required for the tree to develop its active medicinal properties. Additionally, we have had organic certification since 2008.
All the farm activities are done under the principles of permaculture with biodynamical techniques. We care and protect the flora and fauna indigenous to the region, living in total harmony with them. Babo Yaro represents a factor of change for the community to which we belong. Through our actions we create awareness in people for sustainable development and respect for ecology.
If you want to learn more about permaculture, immerse yourself in the eco-organic world and if you share our same philosophy, you are welcome here as long as you possess enthusiasm, desire to share and contribute with the conservation and preservation work for the environment as well as to improve the quality of life for people and all species, animals and vegetables that also inhabit the earth.
Babo Yaro is a project in constant evolution which is always searching for the wide and diverse areas of the organic culture, such as apiculture, bio-construction of new spaces in harmony with nature, developing activities for eco-tourism, harvesting and processing organic coffee, installing a complete European style bakery, among other ambitious desires that we have in mind for which Babo Yaro Project has the necessary potential to materialize these dreams; that is why we reach out to you, to whoever desires to be part of this task, contributing with your knowledge and experience in apiculture, bio-construction, veterinary medicine, bread making, renewable energy, horticulture, vegetarian cuisine, composts, and worm culture. We welcome you and we open the doors of our farm to stay as long as you wish.
The farm is certified organic by IMO Control.
The contributions from wwoofers:
Cultivating and planting
Weeding
Harvesting
Bio-construction
Compost making
Animal caretaking
General repairs
Water development
Trim work
Seed collecting
Fence repair
Bakery (under construction)
…among others.
We welcome wwoofers, preferably older than 23, for a medium to long period of time, one month minimum commitment, the maximum has no limit. Babo Yaro has the capacity to welcome volunteers interested in sustainability, organic agriculture, ecology and conservation. Drugs and alcohol are prohibited.
You are welcome, no matter from where you come!
We expect from our volunteers active participation in our work; we require 7 hours of dedication during five days a week. Lodgings can be at magical camp sites with beautiful scenery or at the cane cabanas with palm roofs which are under construction.
The food is essentially vegetarian. At this time; the farm cannot provide all the necessary food for nutritious and delicious meals because we don’t have enough vegetables planted to cover these requirements. In the meantime, we obtain what is needed outside of the farm but we are working hard to be self-sustainable for a bigger group of people.
Hey there :)

Hello,
I am a United States Peace Corps volunteer and have been living in Moldova, Eastern Europe for the past 2 years and will be finishing my service this summer. I am 26 year old male, very healthy, and I am from South Carolina, USA. I grew up on a cattle farm, so I appreciate working on the farm. I have a bachelor's degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina and have 3 years work experience at an accounting firm.
I would like to WWOOF in Mexico for 3 months from August 20 - November 20, 2011, or longer depending on the needed work. If you would be willing to host me during this time, please send me more info about farm. I am currently studying Spanish and should be able to communicate on a basic level when I arrive, but I am fast learner with language, so I don't think that language will be a problem. I do not have camping supplies, so I will need a place to sleep in a cabana if I was to come stay on your farm. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you!

Hey there,
I'm Mikael, 24, and I'm in love with the idea of WWOOF'ing. I came to Mexico two weeks ago and I'm currently staying in Mexico City, but looking for a farm to volunteer. I've previously done volunteer work with pumas and monkeys in the jungle in Bolivia which I absolutely loved, and I'm looking forward to widen my horizon with organic farming.
Basically I'm in Mexico until early July, so I'm quite flexible with dates over the next four months. I'm contacting a few farms, looking for a place to begin from around March 23 and on. I'm open for both longer and shorter stays.
I really like your description of the farm, and I would be very interested in staying with you. Let me know if any of this sounds good to you!
Cheers,
Mikael
Do you guys need any volunteers in the next month!? I'm coming back to Mexico for about five weeks to get some sun, and seek out some meaningful work. I got all the energy and good intent in the world, and your farms description is so lovely. My spanish is very decent, and I have experience working on farms. I'll be a single female traveler, with very minimal needs.
Let me know if I might fit in to your plans!
love, light, and warmth!
Morgan
Hi!
My name is Eliana Sanchez, 25 years old. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. My parents are both from Jalisco. I am fluent in spanish.
I'm very interested in volunteering at your farm. I have volunteered at local community gardens in Los Angeles but I want to learn about organic agricuIture. I see your bakery is under construction. Also, super interested in baking. Will it open soon?
I'm planning to head over end of May or early June. Does that work for you?
I hope to hear from you soon!
Eliana
Hi :) I feel this beautiful warm feeling of buena onda and love after reading what you have to say. Really, your place seems like a magical place and I love your words about living in harmony and peace. I am passionately interested in participating in your project. You seem to have a wealth of knowledge and more importantly you seem to be willing to share your knowledge with others in the hope of creating a better world for us and for future generations. I am already in Mexico City and I have about 3 months left here and I would love to explore the possibility of contributing to your project. I hope that you have space and the need for me. Below is a little bit about me.
